Self-Serving Bias
The tendency to credit success to your own abilities while blaming failure on external factors.
This bias protects self-esteem by letting us own our wins but deflect our losses. For example, a student might attribute a good grade to their own intelligence, but blame a poor grade on an unfair test. It helps maintain a positive self-image but can distort reality.
Recognising a definition is not the same skill as spotting it.
Two scenarios from the app, with distractors drawn from the same family of biases — which is what makes them hard.
After a project team succeeds, Alex takes full credit for the idea in front of management. When the same project fails next quarter, he blames the unrealistic deadline set by the department head.
Her team won the project bid. 'My strategy for the proposal was spot-on,' she told her manager. When they lost another bid, she said, 'The competitor's pricing was unrealistically low.'
